Coalbed Methane Outreach Program

EPA's Coalbed Methane Outreach Program encourages U.S. coal mines to remove and use methane that is otherwise wasted during mining. These projects have important economic benefits for the mines and their local economies while they also reduce emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. EPA is working with the coal industry and others to identify obstacles to investments in methane recovery and to raise awareness of profitable investments. As a result, coal mines are discovering that methane recovery improves the safety and productivity of mining operations and enables them to profit from methane that was once simply a high-cost mining safety hazard.
