Employment Situation

Nonfarm payroll employment fell by 240,000 in October. Job losses over the last 3 months totaled 651,000. In October, the unemployment rate rose from 6.1 to 6.5 percent, and the number of unemployed persons increased to 10.1 million. Full Text »

Productivity and Costs

Productivity rose 1.1 percent in the nonfarm business sector in third-quarter 2008, as hours fell faster than output. Unit labor costs grew 3.6 percent. During the third quarter of 2008, productivity—as measured by output per hour—increased at a revised seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.1 percent in the nonfarm business sector. Output and hours fell 1.7 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively. Full Text »
