"Did you ever see a place that looked like it was built to enjoy? Well this whole state of Maine looks that way."

Humorist Will Rogers

Welcome

Welcome to Maine and the United States Attorney’s Office.

This web site has been designed to provide you with some information about our state and office.

Maine is 320 miles long and 210 miles wide and has a total land area of 30,862 square miles.  It has 3,500 miles of coastline and 2,000 coastal islands, the largest of which is Mount Desert, home of Acadia National Park.  Maine also has 6,000 lakes and ponds and 5,100 rivers and streams.  Known as the Pine Tree State, Maine has 17 million acres of forest covering approximately 90% of the State.  Mount Katahdin, located in Baxter State Park, is the highest mountain in Maine and the end of the Appalachian Trail.  In addition to its extraordinary natural beauty, Maine is also recognized for its "lobstah" and its wild blueberries.

Located in the far northeast corner of the United States, Maine is the largest of the New England states. West Quoddy Head, in Lubec, is the easternmost land area of the United States and was first to see the sunrise at the beginning of the new millennium.
Maine is the only state that shares its border with only one other state.  In addition, it shares 616 miles of border with Canada (311 land, 305 water.)  The State is divided into sixteen counties.  The population is 1.3 million for an average of 42.7 persons per square mile.

The United States Attorney is the chief federal law enforcement officer within the federal judicial district of Maine which comprises the entire state.  The office represents the United States and has responsibility for:
• the prosecution of criminal cases brought by the Federal government;
• the prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the United States is a party; and
• the collection of debts owed the Federal government which are administratively uncollectible.

Our headquarters office is located in Portland, in Cumberland County, Maine’s largest county with a population of 274,598.  Our branch office is located two hours north in Bangor, in Penobscot County, which is Maine’s third largest county with a population of 147,180.  The Portland office houses the U.S. Attorney; 18 Assistant U.S. Attorneys including a Criminal Chief and Civil Chief and 20 support staff.  The Bangor office is served by 6 Assistant U.S. Attorneys including a Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney and 7 support staff.

We hope you find this site informative and useful.  We also hope it doesn't live up to the Maine saying "You can't get 'theyah' from 'heeyah'"
