Site Description
The Williams Pipe Line (WPL) Site is located at 12th Street and Marion Road in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The disposal pit was an unlined excavation where WPL burned waste until the early 1970s.
In 1987, the Superfund investigation of soil and groundwater focused on volatile organic compounds, pesticides, hydrocarbons and metals. The investigation found volatile/semi-volatile organic compounds contaminating the groundwater. These contaminants are commonly found in petroleum products and were likely associated with the petroleum releases being addressed by the State. Much of the risk associated with the site related to the petroleum contaminants.
EPA added the site to its National Priorities List (NPL) in 1990. No operation & maintenance activities are ongoing.

Cleanup Progress
The following cleanup activities have been completed by the potentially responsible party, WPL:
- Installation of recovery trenches along the boundaries of the WPL site to capture the contamination and to prevent contaminated groundwater from moving off site at unacceptable levels.
- Two years of groundwater monitoring to confirm that no unacceptable exposure would likely occur in the future.
- An additional two quarters of groundwater monitoring data.
Once the entire quarterly data were evaluated and the ROD conclusion confirmed, EPA removed Williams Pipe Line Company Disposal Site from the NPL in April 1999.
