PROFESSIONALIZING THE JUDICIARY
In addition to training, USAID has worked to improve the
quality and legitimacy of the judiciaries, advocating reforms
of the judicial selection process through civil society actors.
As a result, many countries in the region have adopted merit-based
selection processes for judges, requiring them to have credentials
and special training as a requirement to occupy their offices.
Another benefit has been the creation of performance evaluations
for judges based on established standards. This has served
to make judges more accountable for their judicial acts and
to increase the public’s confidence in court systems.
