Fishing is permitted on the Refuge in accordance with all applicable Federal and State and Refuge specific regulations. All waters on the Refuge are classified as impounded waters under the State statutes. Contact the Visitor Center at (573) 222-3589 for current Refuge specific regulations.

Since ditch cleaning efforts have begun, fish species and abundance have improved. The species most commonly caught are crappie, bass, bluegill, bowfin, and catfish. Popular fishing areas include: Stanley Creek, May and Fox Pond, Flat Banks, Red Mill Pond, the downstream end of water control structures, and Ditch 11 and other ditches (see map).

Areas open year-round include Ditch 1, Ditch 2 (south of the pump structure), Ditch 11, Ditch 5 structure (as posted), Mingo River west of Ditch 6, Stanley Creek, May Pond, and Fox Pond. All other waters east of and including Ditch 6 along with Red Mill Pond are closed from September 15th until March 1st. From March 1st until September 15th all Refuge waters are open.
