Twelve Bulgarian Municipalities Open for Business Development

Municipal Local Economic Development is a relatively new but growing concept in Bulgaria. In order to facilitate that growth, USAID has established its municipal local economic development (LED) program in Bulgaria. Participation in the program is conditioned on having trained staff and being “certified” as having met set standards of economic development proficiency.

On December 13, 2005, USAID/Bulgaria Mission Director Michael Fritz awarded certificates to twelve Bulgarian municipalities in recognition of achieving these standards and in recognition that they are municipalities that are "Ready for Business”.

These standards entail establishing municipal LED offices, developing LED action plans and workforce development programs, creating business advisory boards, and undertaking city marketing initiatives. The standards are based on US practices and are designed to attract foreign and domestic direct investment.
