Azerbaijani Student Economics Team Ranks Third Worldwide

USAID’s School Economics Education Program (SEE) student-team from Zangi Lyceum in Baku placed third at the prestigious Hewlett Packard Global Business Challenge (HPGBC) which drew more than 1,000 teams from 68 nations. The team competed in the contest finals, held in Cupertino, California last August, against teams from Ukraine, Russia, Estonia, Canada, and China.

Since 2000, with funding from USAID and private businesses, SEE has provided more than 150 Azerbaijani students annually with training and the opportunity to test their economic knowledge and business decision-making skills at this Hewlett Packard-sponsored competition. Training for the HPGBC, which is conducted by Junior Achievement Worldwide, has helped Azerbaijani school students apply theoretical and practical knowledge and foster entrepreneurial skills. In the past year, 30 SEE teams have entered the world of business simulation, joining thousands of others from around the world. After five months of intense competition, 21 of these teams advanced to the semifinals; one progressed to the finals. In addition to the third place honor captured by the Zangi Lyceum team, the USAID program can also lay partial claim to the success of the Estonia team which earned fourth place in the finals after being trained by an SEE alumnus.

The students' success is a testament to the impact of USAID’s efforts to improve economic and business education for the future workforce in Azerbaijan. Their achievement serves as a model for their peers and has motivated the Ministry of Education to incorporate SEE into its economics curriculum for secondary schools.
