Czech Republic Launching Transition Assistance Program

On September 26, 2005, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Europe and Eurasia (E&E) Thomas Fleetwood Mefford met with Gabriela Dlouha, Director of the Office of Transition Promotion in the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to initiate discussions on coordinating assistance efforts in the E&E region. A former recipient of USAID assistance, the Czech Republic recently established the Office of Transition, becoming an emerging donor within the region. Organizing along the lines of USAID and promoting democracy, human rights and market economies, the Czech Republic Office of Transition will take advantage of “lessons learned” as a former USAID recipient country. Focusing on Bosnia-Herzegovina, Moldova, Serbia and Montenegro and Belarus, the Czech Republic enthusiastically offered to immediately begin coordinating with USAID, especially in Belarus.
