Moscow School Hosts Seminar To Build Interest in Democracy

On July 24-31, 2005 the USAID-supported Moscow School of Political Studies held its second annual seminar “Law, Politics, Economics and Mass Media.” Over 150 participants met with prominent international and Russian experts to discuss issues ranging from the future of democracy in Russia to Russia’s international policies and the country’s position in the world community. Seminar participants included an increased number of representatives from the North Caucasus, who expressed their keen appreciation for the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas, and openly discuss pressing economic and political issues with high-ranking government officials and world-renowned authorities. The North Caucasus participants were enthusiastic about making contact with others, noting that it was a refreshing change from the limited access to debate and interchange they normally experience. Speakers at the seminar included Sergey Stepashin, Chairman of the Accounting Chamber of the Russian Federation; Sergey Yasterzhembskiy, Advisor to the President of Russia; Tobi Gati, Former Special Assistant on Russian Affairs to President Clinton; and Sir Roderic Lyne, the former British Ambassador to Russia.
