USAID Partners in Russia Discuss Women in Politics

In collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section’s Speaker Program, USAID brought together an impressive group of its implementing partners to participate in a session on “Women in Politics” that was led by Ann Stone, an American political consultant invited to Russia to speak about election debates. Held at the American Center on September 26, 2008, Stone’s presentation elicited a lively response from the audience, which included top women experts and activists with long track records in the Russian women’s movement. Stone underscored the critical need to fundamentally reform cultural and educational stereotypes that preclude women from engaging in political activity. Her focus on the importance of challenging popular perceptions generated particular interest among the women leaders present, who agreed that stereotypes limiting women’s role to reproduction and family care have been on the rise in Russian society during recent years.

The U.S. is also offering more concrete support for Russian women’s participation in politics through a newly-announced initiative under USAID’s Development Grants Program that will provide $500,000 in grants for activities that enhance women’s political and civic participation, as well as their economic independence.
