118 Russian Radio Stations Compete at Together Radio Festival

More than 250 radio professionals from 118 radio stations in 67 cities across Russia competed for recognition at Together Radio, the sixth annual festival for regional radio stations. Co-funded by USAID/Russia and the Mott Foundation, the June 28-30 Moscow event awarded stations for programming in five major categories: daily newscast, discussion and analytical programming, reporting, thematic programming, and children’s programming. The category for best children’s program was added this year, thanks to co-sponsorship from the Danish and Norwegian Embassies which funded participant travel and special prizes.

The competition is one part of the festival, which also includes training sessions and master classes taught by leading Russian and international radio broadcast experts on topics such as journalistic ethics, editorial independence, legal aspects of media work, advertising sales, and technology development.

The Together Radio festival is organized by the Foundation for Independent Radio Broadcasting (FNR). Festival entries, which include the finalists from earlier competitions in Russia’s seven federal districts, are evaluated by a jury of privately-owned regional radio station representatives. Each year, Deutshe Welle (Bonn) and Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe (Prague) provide internships to festival winners. USAID’s International Media Partnerships Program, implemented by IREX, also helps FNR to build partnerships with radio festivals in Europe and North America.
