Democracy Review Delegation Meets with Russian NGOs
Staff from USAID/Washington and the State Department visited Krasnodar, Russia on March 30-31, 2008 to meet with a variety of NGOs, human rights activists, journalists, and judicial officials. The group traveled to Russia for 10 days to examine the range of USAID’s democracy programs. The delegation met with a local chapter of the election monitoring network Golos Association, judges from a district court that has implemented USAID-supported innovations, staff and local partners of the Southern Regional Resource Center, and local affiliates of the Memorial human rights network—all of which are supported by USAID programs. These meetings helped the Washington visitors assess the opportunities for, and impact of, regional-level programs. A recurring theme throughout the visit was the expansion of NGO interaction with regional and local government on human rights and various key topics through public councils and other channels.
