Mollaburhan Proves Quick Study in Community Development

On February 5, the community of Mollaburhan, Azerbaijan had much to celebrate: the first anniversary of its participation in the USAID Community Development Activity (CDA) program, the successful completion of four community development projects, and a visit from US Ambassador Ann Derse. For the past year, residents and the local Community Development Council (CDC) had attended trainings, held weekly meetings and raised nearly half the funds needed to implement local projects totaling 35000 AZN.

Ambassador Derse inspected the project sites and met with Mollaburhan CDC members. In her address to the community, she congratulated residents for their achievements and wished them success in similar, future endeavors.

Mollaburhan CDC leader Naseh Mammadov said, “If someone had described this day to me one year ago, I would have shook my head, thinking it was no more than an empty wish! Our CDC, trained by CHF and UMID, has gained skills and abilities for future development here. We are thankful to our donors for standing behind our work and our enthusiasm.”

A symbolic red ribbon was cut at the close of the ceremony to officially inaugurate the projects, and guests were invited to a traditional Azerbaijani tea. Neighboring communities came to celebrate Mollaburhan's success. Some attendees remarked that they hoped to create similar achievements in their own villages.

Mollaburhan has already begun to build upon its initial success, and recently launched a project independent of USAID funding to repair 72 meters of river bridges which connect two villages. The CDC is also planning several other projects to support the expansion of economic opportunities in the community.
