Competition Draws Media Attention to Social Issues

More than 96 journalists representing 61 regional TV companies from 46 cities across western Russia gathered in Cheboksary, the capital of the Chuvash Republic, for the third regional round of the All-Russia TV competition, “Time to Act”. The competition, supported by USAID and the Commission on Human Rights and Civil Society Development under the President of Russia, is the first professional contest to encourage public service and socially responsible journalism and stimulate public discussion on social tolerance issues.

Headed by Vladimir Posner, host of a political talk show and considered to be Russia’s leading media figure, the jury critiqued 357 entries totaling 36 hours of broadcast footage and announced the 18 winning stories. The festival received positive media coverage in Cheboksary, and the President of Chuvash Republic, Nikolai Fedorov, hosted a dinner in the jury’s honor.
