USAID Partner Briefs World Leaders on State of NGOs

At the invitation of the White House, the International Center for Non-Profit Law (ICNL) participated in a technical session on global civil society issues at the United Nations moderated by President Bush on September 19. More than 25 world leaders participated in the roundtable, including Presidents or Prime Ministers of Afghanistan, Morocco, Guatemala, Italy, Liberia, Iraq, Malaysia, Georgia, and Latvia. At the outset of the roundtable, USAID partner Natalia Bourjaily, ICNL’s Vice President for the New Independent States, provided a global overview on constraints confronting civil society. President Bush requested that ICNL compile and forward ideas on how democratic countries might be able to work together to support civil society.

In September, USAID/Russia signed a three-year agreement with ICNL to implement a new NGO Legal Support Program which aims to help Russian NGOs to meet the requirements of the new NGO law, and to improve legislation governing work of NGOs in Russia.
