Festival Explores the Role of Journalists in Russian Society

From May 23-25, 2006, USAID-supported Internews Russia, the National Association of Tele-Broadcasters, and the Alliance of Regional Media Executives hosted “Time to Act”, a festival of regional journalism in Moscow. Supported by the Commission for Human Rights under the President of Russia, the festival is the culmination of nationwide television competitions conducted over the last year to encourage socially responsible journalism and attention to under-reported topics such as xenophobia, HIV/AIDS, and the needs of disadvantaged.

During the three-day festival, prominent human rights activists, politicians, economists, and sociologists discussed issues important to the country’s development and the journalistic profession, including freedom, terrorism, human rights, economic progress, ethics, philanthropy, and the role of Russia in international community. Guests included the President of the Russian Television Academy Vladimir Posner, Editor-in-Chief of Echo Moskvy Alexey Venediktov, President of the Media Union Alexander Lubimov, theater director and playwright Evgeniy Grishkovets, President of INDEM Foundation Georgiy Satarov, Editor-in-Chief of the Russian Newsweek Leonid Parfyonov, Director of Open Russia Foundation Irina Yasina, economist Yegor Gaidar, President of the Glasnost Defense Fund Alexey Simonov, and Head of the Higher School of Economics Evgeniy Yasin.  The recent biographical film about Edward R. Murrow, “Good Night and Good Luck,” led to a vigorous debate on the role of journalists in contemporary society.
