Regional Leaders from Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey Sign Partnership Pact

Cooperation among municipal neighbors is a critical element for sound local governance. When neighbors are separated by national borders, cooperation becomes more complex and still very critical. On December 10, 2005, three regional associations from Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey signed a protocol for cooperation during an international conference on “Cross-border Cooperation of Municipalities” attended by representatives from 118 municipalities. Representing Bulgaria was long time USAID grantee Regional Association of Municipalities, “Trakia”.

The protocol represents the culmination of five years of partnership between the three regional organizations. The representatives agreed to develop regional programs and to undertake various initiatives that promote cross-border cooperation. The Greek side, being a member of the European Union, also agreed to assist the Bulgarian and the Turkish sides to access opportunities provided through the EU. They also agreed to cooperate in the area of natural disaster management.
