Regional Police Chief Receives Tolerance Award

Lieutenant-Colonel Ivailo Damianov of the Regional Police Force based in Dupnitsa, Bulgaria was recognized for his commitment to working across diverse communities
Lieutenant-Colonel Ivailo Damianov of the Regional Police Force based in Dupnitsa, Bulgaria was recognized for his commitment to working across diverse communities

For the second year in a row, the Mediation Center in Dupnitsa, established through USAID’s Ethnic Integration project, bestowed a prize for “The Tolerant Person of the Year.” This year Lieutenant-Colonel Ivajlo Damianov of the Regional Police Department received the prize. Also receiving an award was the Mayor of Dupnitsa, Mr. Parvan Dangov, who accepted “Most Tolerant Institution” honors on behalf of the Municipal administration.

This recognition was not based upon a single act or event but rather a commitment by the municipality and the Regional Police to work with community leaders and NGOs regardless of ethnicity. Through their efforts in creating an environment of tolerance, violent clashes have been averted and successful conflict mediation has occurred.
