USAID Lends Support to Bulgarian-Iraq Economic Forum

With the financial and administrative support of USAID, an Iraqi-Bulgarian business seminar was organized by the Bulgarian-Iraqi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BICCI) on October 3, 2005, as part of the week-long visit to Bulgaria by a sixteen-person Iraqi business delegation.

At the seminar, the Iraqi and Bulgarian businesses introduced themselves and laid out the groundwork for 3 days of business-to-business meetings. Numerous discussions were held throughout the week between interested Bulgarian and Iraqi individual companies on future cooperation across various—energy, water-supply, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, road and bridge construction, and the food industry—sectors.

Additionally, negotiations were held with the local energy company Energo-proekt about a potential partnership on constructing a USD 200mn thermo-power plant in Diwaniya, Iraq. A government delegation headed by the Minister of Electricity is expected to arrive in Sofia for further negotiations of the deal.

The business visit concluded with a press-conference on October 6, at which the Iraqi representatives briefed the local media about the outcomes of the visit. It is hoped that the week's activities will revive the good trade relations and will lead to the signing of direct contracts between Bulgarian and Iraqi companies.
