The Geology Discipline's long and
successful tradition of technical assistance and capacity building in the
international arena has benefited the USGS through increased knowledge that
may be applied to domestic programs. International activities have spanned
the various geologic program areas within the discipline. Current activities include providing training for the new geological survey in Saudi Arabia, conducting global mineral and energy assessments, and participating in the World Coal Quality Inventory (WoCQI). The USGS is also active in international natural hazard mitigation through the Global Seismic Network, the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP) in cooperation with the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, and landslide prediction, mapping and mitigation. In cooperation with the Canadian Geologic Survey, the USGS is studying metallogenesis and tectonics in the Russian Far East and Canada. The marine geology program is studying coastal zone erosion and sedimentary processes. USGS conducts glacier research throughout the temperate and polar regions. |
