RESEARCH INTERESTS

Many of my earlier research activities were directed toward using a variety of paleomagnetic and rock magnetic techniques to gain a better understanding of the Earth's magnetic field and applying the knowledge obtained toward the solution of geologic problems.  More recently, a larger portion of my research activities has been directed toward the analysis and interpretation of gravity and magnetic surveys, using these potential-field data to model subsurface geologic/tectonic structures.

CURRENT WORK

  • Geophysical studies are being carried out in eastern Nevada and western Utah to characterize the structural framework and subsurface shapes of tectonic basins, and provide insights into the structures that may impede or enhance ground-water flow. A 3-dimensional framework for the region is being developed and will be integrated into ground-water models.
  • The paleomagnetic signature of sedimentary sequences in the greater San Francisco Bay region is being investigated in order to provide tentative time-lines for geologic correlation.  Data obtained will aid in understanding the mechanics of ground subsidence and provide new insights into anomalous, but brief, behavior of the geomagnetic field, intervals known as “excursions.”
  • Paleomagnetic/rock magnetic studies in the Sonoma Volcanics, CA are being used to help correlate the various lithologies (flows, breccias, tuffs, etc.), their distribution, and the role of structure in promoting or hindering groundwater flow in heterogeneous volcanic deposits.
