Like all federal agencies, the Department of Justice is required under
the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to disclose records requested in
writing by any person.
Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee
The mission of the Law Enforcement Community Coordination (LECC) Unit
is to help
law enforcement and criminal justice agencies along with community-based
efforts on any number of drug and violent crime issues. To make the best
use of scarce resources, the district promotes coordination and cooperation
between federal, state and local law enforcement and community-based groups
to work together to address challenges that face Missouri.
Operation Weed and Seed
Operation Weed and Seed is a program that aims to prevent, control, and
reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in targeted high-crime
neighborhoods across the country. Weed and Seed sites range in size from
several neighborhood blocks to 15 square miles.
Project Safe Neighborhoods
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a nationwide commitment to reduce gun crime
in America by networking existing local programs that target gun crime.
The effectiveness of Project Safe Neighborhoods is based on the ability
of federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified offensive
that is led by the United States Attorney in every one of the 94 federal
judicial districts across America. That iniative includes Project
Ceasefire in the Kansas City and Springfield, Missouri areas.
Project Ceasefire
Project Ceasefire, the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative in the Kansas City, Missouri area, is recognized nationally
as being not only one of the first anti-gun violence programs, but one
of the most successful. In 1999, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western
District of Missouri partnered with the Kansas City Metropolitan Crime
Commission to develop and implement a strategy to reduce gun violence.
Through contributions from the area business community and foundations,
Project Ceasefire was launched. In June 2002, Project Ceasefire was also
launched in the Springfield, Missouri area in partnership with the Greene
County Prosecutor's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Victim-Witness Assistance
The goal of the Federal Victim-Witness Program is to ensure that victims
and witnesses of federal crimes are treated fairly, that their privacy
is respected, and that they are treated with dignity and respect. The
Victim-Witness Assistance Unit is committed to helping victims and witnesses
of crime while they are involved with the federal criminal justice system.
