Purpose: | The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold an EPA-Venture Capitalist Summit on New Financial Programs to Commercialize Environmental Technology to follow up the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT) report on EPA and the Venture Capital Community: Building Bridges to Commercialize Technology (April 2008). The report recommends that EPA create programs, similar to those of the US Department of Energy, to provide financial support (e.g., loan guarantees, grants, revolving loan funds) to encourage venture capital investment in environmental technology commercialization. The Summit will bring together senior career EPA managers (Deputy Assistant Administrators and Deputy Regional Administrators) with senior venture capitalists who were part of the Venture Capital Study. |

Purpose: | The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) is holding a public meeting in conjunction with the SETAC North America Annual Meeting to review progress on characterizing sources of exposure and environmental impacts of endocrine disruptors. Since 2005, the EPA STAR grant program has provided $7.6 million for 13 research studies to develop methods to monitor endocrine disruptors in complex mixtures and to characterize the impact of hormones in waste from animal feeding operations. Studies that are developing innovative behavioral, molecular, and biosensor methods for detecting endocrine disruptors and hormone activity in environmental media such as wastewater effluent are nearing completion. Studies on the transport, fate, and effects of natural and synthetic hormones from cattle, swine, and poultry waste along with the effects of different waste disposal practices on transport to soil and water are in progress. Several of the studies are being conducted in cooperation with scientists at USEPA, USGS, and USDA. This meeting provides the opportunity for researchers to discuss recent findings, common methodological issues, and upcoming investigations on endocrine disruptors in the environment. |
