Top Performer (2005)

San Diego City Schools (SDCS) educates nearly 133,000 K-12 students across more than 250 educational facilities, 148 of which have earned the ENERGY STAR.  It is the eighth largest urban school district in the country. SDCS has assessed the energy performance of 66% of its buildings and undertaken improvements since it partnered ENERGY STAR in 1996. With a portfolio-wide rating of 89, the district has realized a utility bill reduction approaching $12 million dollars per year. A partnership with San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) and grant money from the California Public Utility Commission have saved the district $1.8 million in lighting and controls purchases over the last two years, with a second SDG&E rebate project saving $350,000 in purchases of about 1,000 new ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators.  The district continues to lead the way in energy efficiency with installation of more than 3.6 megawatts of flexible amorphous crystal photovoltaic panels bonded to new single-ply white cool roofs, grants for hydrogen refueling stations, and innovative energy-education programs.
