West Allis - West Milwaukee School District

West Allis, Wisconsin
20% Improvement (2007)
Top Performer (2007)

The West Allis-West Milwaukee School District is the 13th largest in Wisconsin. It consists of 9,000 students, 600 staff, 17 schools, and more than 1.7 million square feet of space. By successfully meeting its goal to reduce energy use by 50 percent in three years, the district saved 10.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity, 768,000 therms of natural gas, and 16 million gallons of water.  Those savings resulted in the reduction of 7,000 tons of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions.

The district became an ENERGY STAR partner in 2007 and has been recognized as an ENERGY STAR Leader for a 20 percent improvement and an average energy performance rating of 75 or better across its portfolio. Three of the West Allis-West Milwaukee schools have earned the ENERGY STAR, and seven more are eligible for the label.

In 2004, the district school board hired Energy Education, Inc. to help create a district wide "Energy Ethic." The West Allis-West Milwaukee School District reinvests the savings into efficiency technology such as new boilers, variable field drives, and lighting retrofits to 100-watt compact fluorescent light bulbs. Most recently, the district has invested in HVAC heat recovery wheels and indirect evaporative cooling, and it expects to improve energy efficiency another 20 percent by 2009.
