Single-car impact with steel coil, June 4 and 7, 2002

The video shows the impacts of two cab cars with steel coils, both at 14 miles per hour. The first two views show the impact of the 1990's design cab car with a steel coil, initially standing on a wooden table. The corner and collision posts of this cab car are typical of designs developed in the 1990's. This impact is shown twice, once in real time and once in slow motion. The steel coil impacts the corner post above the floor, and the top connection of the corner post fails and the space where the cab car operator would be is crushed. The second two views show the impact of the State-of-the-Art design cab car with a steel coil. Improvements over the 1990's design include better attachment of the corner post near its top, better connection of the corner post with the collision post by using a shear panel, and a continuous side sill, providing support to the corner post near its base. The corner post remains attached during the impact and the space for the operator is preserved. The corner post is dented into a shallow 'V' during the impact.
