Mission and Objectives

SMIG, the USGS Surface-water quality and flow Modeling Interest Group, was created with funding from the USGS Office of Water Quality. Through this interest group, surface-water modelers can:
o network with other modelers
o keep abreast of current modeling activities with the USGS
o discuss new modeling techniques, algorithms, interfaces, etc.
o learn about new models
o share ideas and experience, solve problems, ...

Mission

The mission of the USGS Surface-water quality and flow Modeling Interest Group is to heighten the awareness of surface-water quality and flow modeling activities within the U.S. Geological Survey, enhance communication, and facilitate the sharing of information and expertise among modelers.

Scope

The scope of the USGS Surface-water quality and flow modeling Interest Group includes all surface-water modeling activities. Topics of interest include any issues relevant to the hydraulic modeling and/or water-quality modeling of surface waters (lakes, reservoirs, rivers, estuaries, and watersheds).

Objectives and Activities

  • Produce a bi-annual newsletter which is distributed only via the WWW. The newsletter contains:
    • contributed feature articles, with topics such as:
      • current modeling projects
      • evaluations of the capabilities of selected models
      • current model development activities
      • model interfaces
      • model algorithms
      • visualization techniques
    • lists of recent publications of interest
    • lists of meetings of interest

  • Maintain a set of WWW pages. The SMIG web pages include:
    • the latest newsletter
    • back issues of the newsletter
    • links to other pages of interest
    • links to ftp-able archives of models
    • summaries of model capabilities/limitations
    • a mailing list

Membership

Membership in SMIG is open to anyone interested in surface-water modeling. To join, just add your name to the mailing list.

Directors

The "Board of Directors" of the SMIG consists of a small group of USGS modelers and OWQ personnel that are interested in promoting the mission of the SMIG. Currently, the Directors are (in alphabetical order):
o Jerad Bales -- Hydrologist, Raleigh, NC <jdbales@usgs.gov>
o Ken Bencala -- Chemical Engineer, Menlo Park, CA <kbencala@usgs.gov>
o Bob Broshears -- Central Region WQ Specialist, Denver, CO <rebroshe@usgs.gov>
o Herb Buxton -- Coordinator, Toxics Program, W. Trenton, NJ <hbuxton@usgs.gov>
o Karen Rice -- Hydrologist, Charlottesville, VA <kcrice@usgs.gov>
o Stewart Rounds -- Hydrologist, Portland, OR <sarounds@usgs.gov>
o Rob Runkel -- Hydrologist, Denver, CO <runkel@usgs.gov>
