The USGS and National Park Service are offering a free short-course on R, the widely-used open-source (free) statistical package, starting October 27. Designed for natural resource managers, the course employs conference calls paired with live Web demonstrations and is open to all who are interested, requiring only a long-distance call to the phone bridge. R provides a comprehensive environment for statistical analysis and graphics. R is extensive in its coverage and the availability of new, cutting-edge applications, and it runs under most operating systems. USGS statistician Paul Geissler organized the training and is presenting it with Tom Philippi of NPS. The USGS Fort Collins Science Center is providing database and systems support for the training, which is hosted through FORT.
