Although employers are the major source of health care coverage for persons under age 65, certain restrictions exclude many employees and their families from coverage, or limit the benefits received. This article explores the relationship between employer-provided health care benefits and the work force, including the availability of health care benefits by industry, occupation, establishment size, and other factors. The article also examines the extent to which health care benefits are available to dependents of employees; the barriers preventing employees from receiving health care benefits; and the effect of job switching on such benefits.
