Purpose
The purpose of this investigation is to initiate a ground water
monitoring program for ground water beneath Biscayne Bay and the reef tract in
Biscayne National Park. The objectives are to install a series of monitoring
wells that will allow sampling of ground water along a transect of sites
extending offshore from near Goulds Canal to Pacific Reef. Each site will
consist of two or more shallow wells (less than 60 feet) completed to different
target depths in order to observe any existing groundwater gradients beneath the
seafloor.
Information to be Derived
Lithologic descriptions will be made on each of the cores taken for
this study. Radiocarbon dates will be obtained to assess where
Holocene/Pleistocene boundaries exist. Cross sections will be made based on
these lithologic descriptions. Initial parameters to be monitored are
conductivity and salinity. Future parameters may include nutrients,
contaminants and other constituents to be determined in conjunction with BNP.
Summary
Two trips to BNP were made for coring and monitoring well
installations. The first date was June 2001 and the second was in May/June
2002. A total of 11 core/wells were drilled for both trips.
Notes
25ft BNP boat was also used.
