Even during a period of rapid employment growth from 1985 through 1989, 4.3 million persons were from displaced from their jobs. This article provides an overview of displacement patterns during the 1980's and describes the employment situation of workers displaced during the 1985-89 period, focusing on those who had been with their employers for at least 3 years.
