Project Safe Neighborhood: MIDDLETOWN MAN CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL FIREARM POSSESSION Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that a federal grand jury in New Haven has returned an Indictment charging TIMOTHY JACOBS, 59, of Highland Avenue, Middletown, with illegal possession of an SWD Street Sweeper, 12-gauge shotgun. The Indictment was returned yesterday, December 19. The Indictment alleges that, in October 2007, JACOBS knowingly possessed an SWD Street Sweeper, 12-gauge shotgun, which was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. Federal law requires that the possession of such a firearm be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. If convicted, JACOBS faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to $10,000. U.S. Attorney O’Connor stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. This case was investigated by the Middletown Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives pursuant to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Mattei. The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents of Connecticut’s cities. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. | |
