ANSONIA MAN CHARGED WITH ARMED ROBBERIES OF CONNECTICUT AND MASSACHUSETTS JEWELRY STORES

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that a federal grand jury sitting in Bridgeport has returned a four-count Indictment charging ANTHONY CURRAL, 30, of Ansonia, Connecticut, with two counts of Hobbs Act robbery, one count of interstate transportation of stolen property, and conspiracy.  The Indictment was returned today.

The Indictment alleges that CURRAL participated in the armed robberies of Hannoush Jewelry in Natick, Massachusetts, on July 20, 2005, and Lux Bond and Green in South Windsor, Connecticut, on February 1, 2006.

CURRAL has been detained since his arrest on September 25, 2007.

If convicted of the charges, CURRAL faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 90 years and a fine of up to $1,000,000.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.  The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This matter was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – New Haven Violent Crimes Safe Streets Task Force, and the members of local law enforcement agencies including the Greenwich, South Windsor, Glastonbury, Bridgeport, Ansonia, Shelton and Natick (MA) Police Departments.

This case is being prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Kaplan and Assistant United States Attorney Paul Murphy.
