HARTFORD MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL CRACK COCAINE DISTRIBUTION CHARGE

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that MICHAEL DRUMMOND, age 27, formerly of Mansfield Street, Hartford, pleaded guilty yesterday, August 22, before United States District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven to one count of conspiring to distribute more than 50 grams of cocaine base (“crack cocaine”).

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, this matter stems from an investigation conducted by the Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force.  During the investigation, a cooperating witness made three controlled purchases of crack cocaine from DRUMMOND.  Each transaction was surveilled by law enforcement officers and conversations surrounding the transactions were recorded.

DRUMMOND has been detained since his arrest in March 2007.

Judge Arterton has scheduled sentencing for November 9, 2007, at which time DRUMMOND faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 10 years, a maximum term of imprisonment of life, and a fine of up to $4,000,000.  Because of DRUMMOND’s criminal history, he is considered a career offender and is subject to an enhanced prison term.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor commended the investigation of this matter that was conducted by the Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force, notably the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Hartford Police Department.  This case is being prosecuted by James I. Glasser, Counsel to the U.S. Attorney.
