Project Safe Neighborhoods: BRIDGEPORT MAN SENTENCED TO 46 MONTHS OF IMPRISONMENT FOR VIOLATING SUPERVISED RELEASE

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that EDDIE SMALLS, age 34, formerly of 107 Coleman Street, Bridgeport, was sentenced yesterday, June 13, by Senior United States District Judge Ellen Bree Burns in New Haven to 46 months of imprisonment for violating the terms and conditions of his federal supervised release.

On October 12, 1999, Judge Burns sentenced SMALLS to 72 months of imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release, for violating federal narcotics laws. SMALLS’ term of supervised release commenced on October 1, 2003. On January 19, 2007, Bridgeport Police stopped SMALLS for a motor vehicle violation. During the car stop, police discovered that SMALLS was in possession of a firearm. SMALLS was arrested by state authorities and charged with several firearms offenses.

In May 2007, SMALLS pleaded guilty to state charges and was sentenced to an eight-year term of incarceration. Yesterday, Judge Burns sentenced SMALLS to 46 months of imprisonment for violating his federal supervised release, and ordered SMALLS to serve the federal term of imprisonment consecutive to the eight-year term imposed by state authorities.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor commended the investigation of this matter that was conducted by the Bridgeport Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This prosecution is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative, which is aimed at reducing gun violence, deterring illegal possession, sale and trafficking of guns, and improving the safety of residents throughout Connecticut. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. This case was prosecuted by James I. Glasser, Counsel to the U.S. Attorney.
