HARTFORD COCAINE TRAFFICKER SENTENCED TO MORE THAN NINE YEARS IN PRISON

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that PEDRO RAMIREZ, age 34, formerly of Claremont Street, Hartford, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford to 110 months of imprisonment, followed by six years of supervised release, for participating in a conspiracy to distribute large quantities of cocaine. Judge Thompson also ordered RAMIREZ to pay a fine in the amount of $3,600.

The investigation utilized a variety of investigative techniques including controlled purchases of narcotics, extensive surveillance, and court authorized wiretaps.

In March 2006, RAMIREZ was arrested after he delivered a kilogram of cocaine to an individual cooperating with law enforcement authorities. Following his arrest, RAMIREZ was indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, more than 500 grams of cocaine. RAMIREZ pleaded guilty on October 12, 2006, admitting that he conspired to distribute between 3.5 and five kilograms of cocaine.

“Federal authorities will continue to work with our state and local counterparts to investigate and prosecute significant narcotics traffickers in Connecticut’s cities,” U.S. Attorney O’Connor stated. “Drug trafficking and its attendant ills are responsible for much of the blight in our urban centers, and we will work diligently to restore these communities to residents and familites who deserve to live safely.”

U.S. Attorney O’Connor commended the investigation of this matter that was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Hartford Police Department. This case was prosecuted by James I. Glasser, Counsel to the U.S. Attorney.
