BRIDGEPORT MAN CHARGED WITH DISTRIBUTING CRACK COCAINE

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that a federal grand jury in Bridgeport returned a five-count Indictment today charging EFRAIN JOHNSON, also known as “Pootney,” age 25, of 169 Laurel Avenue, Bridgeport, with five counts of possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor stated that the charges against JOHNSON stem from a joint investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Connecticut State Police and the Bridgeport Police Department. During the course of the investigation, JOHNSON is alleged to have made five sales of crack cocaine, each involving more than five grams.

If convicted, JOHNSON faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years, a maximum term of 40 years and a fine of up to $2,000,000, on each count.

“The vigorous enforcement of our drug laws is critical to ensuring safe communities,” U.S. Attorney O’Connor stated.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor also praised the collaborative investigation of this matter that has been conducted by federal, state and local law enforcement authorities.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This matter is being prosecuted by James I. Glasser, Counsel to the U.S. Attorney, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alina P. Reynolds.
