Marmot Dam Breach, Sandy River, Oregon
October 19, 2007

Marmot Dam Breach, October 19, 2007

Scientists at the Cascades Volcano Observatory utilized their experience with time-lapse photography and sampling high-sediment-transporting flows at Mount St. Helens to participate in a project examining the sediment release from the recently breached Marmot Dam on the Sandy River, Oregon, which drains Mount Hood. This time lapse movie shows the breaching of the dam on October 19, 2007 and the subsequent rapid evacuation of sediment. In this movie, the sediment dam is about 40 feet tall and about 150 feet wide. The black well casings that become exposed are about 40 feet tall. The images are snapped at 10-minute intervals. The frame showing the climax of the breach is at 5:44 pm PDT October 19. The last night time shot is at 9:24 pm PDT (less than 4 hours after the breach). The first daylight shot that follows is at 07:04 am PDT October 20, and the last frame is ~3:30pm PDT (~22 hours after the breach).
