Development Alliance to Support School Economics Education

USAID, Chevron Khazar Ltd., and StatoilHydrol signed the first public-private partnership memorandum of understanding (MOU) on September 27, 2008 to support the implementation of the School Economics Education (SEE) Program by Junior Achievement Azerbaijan (JAA) in 230 schools between 2008 and 2010. SEE activities strengthen business and economic education through hands-on training to develop entrepreneurship, work-readiness skills, and financial literacy among high school students.

“By supporting the School Economics Education program, USAID and its partners are investing in the future of Azerbaijan,” noted USAID Country Coordinator Scott Taylor. “After learning the principles of a free market system and understanding basic business and entrepreneurial skills, students are better prepared to assume stewardship of Azerbaijan’s economy in a way that promotes consistent and stable economic growth.”

Principals from USAID, StatoilHydrol, Chevron Khazar, Ltd., and Junior Achievement Azerbaijan met to establish joint support for high school economics and business education and formalize Azerbaijan’s first public-private partnership.

JAA Executive Director Vusal Khanlarov, explained how SEE will impact thousands of students across Azerbaijan. “Azerbaijani students will have the opportunity to study fundamental and international economics through the JAA Economics curriculum, examine business management through the Student Companies Project, learn business ethics, and gain real-work experience through the Job Shadow Program,” he said. SEE also prepares students to compete in the National Management and Economic Competition and the HP Global Business Challenge.

Olav Skalmeraas, Vice-President of StatoilHydro Azerbaijan, and Bob Dastmalchi, Country Manager for Chevron Khazar Ltd., each spoke about the contributions and commitments their respective companies have made to JAA’s successful programs to strengthen economic education in Azerbaijan. “Education is the key to economic development for all countries; therefore we put a lot of emphasis on encouraging young people to become educated and prepared to enter future business life,” noted Skalmeraas.

Junior Achievement Azerbaijan is the local representative of Junior Achievement Worldwide, a not-for-profit organization whose core purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. Junior Achievement Azerbaijan’s strategy is to create a workforce of economically and business-educated young people and to provide necessary skills and knowledge to the young generation of future business leaders who appreciate free market and business values.
