USAID’s Investments in Global Water Resources Management

USAID has many goals for assisting people in developing countries, all of which require adequate supplies of clean freshwater. Water resources management helps protect the world's environment, foster economic growth and sustainable agricultural development, promote democratic participation in governance, and improve health.

USAID and the global community have come to understand that effective water resources management requires an approach involving the participation of users, planners, managers, and policy makers at all levels. By first assessing a country's overall water supply and demand, and through improving the ability of governmental and non-governmental organizations to achieve results, and a coordinated response at local, national, and international levels, effective water resources management is achievable.

The Agency is working towards that goal. The fundamental role of the Agency in the water sector is to promote the use of integrated approaches to water resources management worldwide by providing technical and managerial assistance, education and outreach opportunities, and international leadership through both USAID and other donor programs.

USAID’s current portfolio shows that its operating units are engaged in the broadest spectrum of water resources management activities spread across all sectors. Currently, USAID works in four primary sectors, which are organized around twelve technical sub-sectors. These include:

Every sector in which USAID is engaged clearly indicates the important role that water resources play in fostering economic and agricultural development, human health, ecological sustainability, and conflict prevention.
