Shuvalan Children and Family Support Center Celebrates Ramadan

On September 24, 2008, U.S. Ambassador Anne Derse visited the Shuvalan Child and Family Support Center in Shuvalan, a suburb north of Baku, Azerbaijan. Ambassador Derse visited the center to review its progress in developing community-based alternative services for vulnerable children and to recognize the children, families, and staff during the month of Ramadan.

The Shuvalan Children and Family Support Center is one of three centers supported by USAID and implemented by Save the Children Federation in partnership with United Aid for Azerbaijan within the Community-based Children’s Support Program. Launched in October 2004, the community-based Children’s Support Program promotes the full integration of vulnerable children into society and develops community capacity to care for these children in three areas of Azerbaijan-Mingechevir, Goranboy, and Shuvalan. Providing community development activities, family support services, and children’s services, the centers aim to prevent factors that lead to institutionalization and facilitate the children’s return to their families.

Administration of the Shuvalan Center has been successfully handed over to Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Family, Women and Children’s Issues. This transfer continues the cooperation between the Government of Azerbaijan and the USAID project to ensure the sustainability of the center.

During her visit, Ambassador Derse observed a group rehabilitation session, an art therapy session with children, an individual and family consultation session, and a healthy lifestyle and independent living skills training. She also delivered donated gifts and a formal address.

Children at the USAID-supported Shuvalan Child and Family Support Center are able to access an array of community-based services to help them achieve their fullest potential. Administration of the center has been transferred to the Government of Azerbaijan to ensure its sustainability.
