The MERC Program increases the technical capacity of the Middle East, promotes direct Arab-Israeli cooperation and positively impacts regional development.

What has MERC done to build Arab-Israeli cooperation?

  • MERC involves partnerships between Israel and several Arab countries.
  • Over the past decade, projects have become less reliant on technical partners from the United States. The majority of the current projects do not include an American partner.

What has MERC done to build research capacity in the Middle East?

  • Several MERC projects cross train students in their partner ´s laboratory to increase scientific capacity and idea sharing.
  • Researchers develop and share solutions to problems common to several countries.
  • Equipment purchased through MERC projects is used for further research after MERC funding is complete.

How has MERC produced a developmental impact?

  • Technologies developed by MERC projects have been implemented throughout the Middle East (see success stories).
  • Each MERC project must include a plan to involve the appropriate beneficiaries.
  • Seminars, workshops and community meetings are common to MERC projects.
  • People trained through MERC projects increase the knowledge base in their communities.
  • Research topics funded by MERC must be proved regionally important.
