Our activities have included large infrastructure projects that will dramatically affect entire communities, such as the construction of the new Arugam Bay Bridge, the building and equipping of nine vocational training centers that will prepare young people for high-demand jobs, and the renovation of three fishing harbors. It has also included smaller community infrastructure, such as playgrounds, public markets, libraries, and transport facilities.

USAID Sri Lanka has created a new two-pronged strategy to support the positive transformation in the Eastern Province and adjoining districts by developing the regional economy and local private sector investment opportunities, as well as strengthening local government and increasing citizen participation in the governance process. The new 2008-2012 strategy is based on the approach that economic growth can contribute to building social and economic security to help establish conditions conducive to a political solution through focusing on regional needs, but also works at the national level, from which many of the most critical democracy, governance and conflict mitigation issues emanate.
