Given the increasing international and global nature of many of the world`s
natural science problems, USGS uses partnerships as a cornerstone to conduct
a wide variety of science and information activities. Many of USGS`s
international activities are conducted at the request of U.S. Government
agencies such as the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Department
of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the National
Science Foundation. USGS also works with agencies representing over 40
foreign governments and key international organizations such as the United
Nations and the International Standards Organization.
These activities are all authorized by legislation and by DOS Circular
175 approved international agreements. In addition USGS`s international
activities have also been supported by funding from donor organizations
such as the World Bank and the Inter American Development Bank. Both domestic
and foreign companies from the private sector are playing an increasing
role in research and development, education and technical assistance provided
by USGS world wide.
