Healing the Stigma of Addiction: New Tools for Recovery Support

The Addiction Resource Council, Inc. is presenting this workshop as part of its community/professional education programming. The workshop will explore the nature of stigma, its effects on people with addictions, and workable ways in which anyone can help heal the stigma and its effects on individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole. Participants will learn about social marketing, and new tools that are available to make public education efforts more successful. Workshop Objectives: Participants will be able to: describe the seeds of stigma and the psychological needs it fulfills for people who stigmatize others; identify public education activities for stigma reduction that fit their own interests, skills, and level of commitment; describe resources that are available for social marketing and other public education efforts; and identify ways in which they might use these resources to meet their own goals for stigma reduction. Cost: The fee to attend is $20 which includes all workshop materials and continental breakfast.

This workshop is intended for anyone who is interested in helping reduce the stigma associated with addiction such as addiction prevention, intervention and treatment professionals, law enforcement and criminal justice professionals,school personnel,elected officials & decision makers who finance alcohol and other drug abuse programs, and individuals and families who have experienced addiction.

Speaker: Daphne Baille, M.A., Director of communications and marketing for TASC, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides recovery management services for individuals with substance abuse and mental health disorders. She provides training and consultation on social marketing, public relations and fundraising. She has produced a nationally-syndicated public affairs radio program, coordinated public relations and fundraising for the American Red Cross in Chicago and for college and professional football teams. She holds a B.A. in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame and an M.A. in International Studies from DePaul University, with a focus on social marketing and behavior change
