On September 28, 2004 all Washington residents will celebrate the power recovery when they attend an All Stars Awards Ceremony for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Treatment Providers that have rendered outstanding service to the community. The annual awards ceremony will be held at the Urban Horticulture Center at the University of Washington and will be followed by a half-day Recovery Forum, featuring, county, local and state leaders and champions of the belief that recovery works. The forum will address some of the key themes in the recovery community and the public at large including destigmatization, trauma and integration. The forum will also offer participants an idea of the latest innovations and will help put a face on the voices of recovery. This is an event not to be missed!

Hands Across the Bridge
Vancouver/Portland
On Labor Day, hundreds of Oregon and Washington residents will celebrate recovery from alcohol and drug addiction when they join hands to span the Interstate 5 Bridge connecting the states of Oregon and Washington. The third annual Hands Across the Bridge event, set for 10-noon on Monday, Sept. 6, with ceremonies on both the Portland and Vancouver sides of the Columbia, kicks off National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Last years event drew around 500 participants whose lives had been touched by addiction and recovery. This years event will be followed by a Recovery Rocks Celebration, with food, entertainment, booths, games and more! This event is sponsored by: The Recovery Association Project (RAP), Central City Concern, Oregon Partnership, Asian/Pacific American Community Support & Service Association (APACSA)

I have been asked to give an overview of what Wahkiakum Co. is doing to support Alcohol and drug Recovery Month. What we are doing is offering free assessments to self referred individuals who complete their assessment in the month of September, and running the proclamation in the local paper the Eagle and along with this we are doing a series of 5 articles, one each week that include: September 2nd- The CAGE a quick Alcohol Screening device for self identification of potential alcohol problems. September 9th- Article on FAS to support Sept 9th, FAS Day September 16th-History of treatment in Wahkiakum Co. September 23rd- Overview of our Co-Occurring Disorders Program. September 30th- Introduction of Wahkiakum Chemical Dependency Staff, short Autobiographies. We are happy to support Drug and Alcohol Recovery Month and strive to make everyday Alcohol and Drug recovery day for our clients and their families.
