Providers Summit-Beginning A New Conversation

City

Oak Park

Description

This is the Kick-off event; a working workshop; answering questions and most importantly, finding out what Providers want us to do. Why? The need for integration of Treatment and Recovery Support Services is upon us as an industry. The integration of Peer-Based Addiction Recovery Support Services with Treatment has been identified by SAMHSA as a critical issue in design and implementation of recovery support services. We intend to begin our integration of Treatment with Recovery Support Services with a Providers Summit to allow Providers to be a part of the decision-making process. The Providers Summit is to set the stage for Beginning A New Conversation, with the overt understanding that we need to talk to each other with a new voice, engage in new conversation and listen with a new ear. We want to simply ask Providers, i.e. How do they want to see Recovery Support Services develop and logistically structured?; What do they currently do that they believe are Recovery Support Services?; Where do they want to see Recovery Resource Center fit into the scheme of things?; How can RRC best assist their relentless efforts with members?; Are Providers interested in Peer-based assistance with member-developed Continuing Recovery Planning, on-site or off-site?; How can RRC and Providers best maximize collaborative alliances for the support, autonomy and victory for the individual recovery member? The Providers Summit will build upon learning evidenced by the 2003 RRC Community Needs Assessment for Providers: Providers want an all-inclusive referral source; Providers are asking for education on the subject of recovery support services; Providers want assistance with this new addition to the current continuum of care; Providers want a mechanism that keeps them informed of their clients progress after the client has left Treatment; Providers that are not members of the recovering community are feeling a reverse stigma and an exclusion from the new recovery movement; consequently, an alienating aura is being produced for many by the introduction of new buzz words, i.e. peer to peer, recovery support services, peer-led, peer-run and peer-driven; Providers want to know more about Recovery Communities Services Program and lessons learned about implementation of recovery support services.

Date

September 29, 2004

Type of Event

Speaker Panel with participant discussion in breakout groups to facilitate integration of recovery support services & peer recovery support services with traditional Treatment

Location

1140 Lake Street 3rd Floor

Program Agenda

Information will be presented on: Addiction as a Chronic Disease, the Principles of Recovery Management, and implications for treatment providers; The history of the Recovery Movement and the social model of recovery; CSAT-funded Recovery Community Services Programs and services; Illinois Dept of Human Services, DASA, efforts to encourage the development of recovery support services and their integration with treatment including through funding and Rule 2060; Recovery Resource Center services; Treatment provider Continuing Recovery Planning processes and ways to integrate/coordinate the planning and delivery of recovery support service. The format will be presentations with handouts and discussion. The final hour or two will be a working session with those in attendance identifying ways to integrate recovery support services into Treatment and giving input on Continuing Recovery Planning as an initial starting place. Time Frame: 10 am 3:00 pm

Who Should Participate

Decision-makers of Treatment Providers in the State of Illinois to participate in a discussion about recovery support services & peer-based recovery support services with a focus on providers on the West Side of Chicago & Western Suburbs. The participants will be persons that can make a critical decision for their respective organizations; persons that can change, or establish new rules for their organization to ease the integration or close collaboration of recovery support services with Treatment Providers. This event is the kick-off for future sequels of discussions on related topics and focus on various stakeholder and ally groups of the recovery community.

Expected Number of Participants

40-50

Invited Officials/Presenters

Peter Gaumond, Department of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA); Dr. Andrea Barthwell, Former Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control; June Gertig, J.D., Director CSAT/RCSP Technical Assistance; Skip Land, Veteran Voice of the Recovery Movement; Mike Boyle, Executive Vice-President of Fayette Companies; Cynthia Cameron, Executive Director, Recovery Resource Center; and Paul Lauridsen, Director, Stepping Stones Treatment Center.
