September 17 , 2008

NEW DELHI – U.S. Ambassador to India David C. Mulford today announced that the United States will contribute an additional Rs. 11.5 crore (USD $2.5 million) to provide relief to victims of the recent floods in Bihar.

On behalf of the American people, Ambassador Mulford offered his sympathy to those who continue to suffer in the aftermath of the disaster and expressed America’s willingness to provide further support as needed. “When Americans see suffering, as in Bihar, we want to help,” the Ambassador said. “We will support India’s efforts to assist the people of Bihar.”

The United States contributed Rs. 46 lakhs (USD $100,000) for Bihar relief when the flood occurred last month and is now providing significant additional resources as the magnitude of Bihar's continuing flood disaster unfolds.

The United States' contribution will compliment the relief efforts the Government of India in Bihar and will be closely coordinated with District-level officials.
