Description

Speaking will be Oscar Manning, a Licensed Professional Counseling intern and person in Recovery, and Coordinater of Services for APAA. Oscar will be speaking on co-occuring and coexisting disorders. Joe Powell, Director of APAA, will be speaking on the importance of Recovery and the APAA organization. Louis Deere, psychiatrist and person in Recovery, will keynote. Also speaking are locals in Recovery Paul Clarkson and David Whithers. During this event there will also be mini physicals, mental exams and testing for HIV/STD/Cholesterol tests, Beck Depression screening, and other exams. APAA will partner with the LaSima Foundation to conduct the screenings.

Rainbow Drummers

Description

Recovery Month should be special in El Paso. The El Paso Alliance will be hosting two Drumming Circles, on the 11th and 25th. The Rainbow Drummers will begin at 8:30PM on each day and go until the drumming finishes. The circle is in the Native American tradition and features 20 octagonal 18 inch tambourine style drums that were produced especially for the recovery community in El Paso. The drums were made at the Taos Pueblo by Taos Drum Company.

The El Paso Alliance will host the first annual "Recovery Under the Stars". This open air concert will start in the afternoon with a picnic, volleyball, softball, frisbees and after dark the music begins. Texas Soberfest 2003

Description

Texas Soberfest is a celebration of life free from addiction. It's a rockin' party featuring some of the area's hottest bands and best-known entertainers all designed to showcase a healthy and clean lifestyle. Other festivities for this year's bash include: guest speakers, a martial arts exhibition, magicians, comedians, great food, children's'activities, a silent auction and a raffle. This is the festival's second year. In 2002, the event drew more than 5,000 people. This year, organizers are predicting double that number because of the positive community response. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Austin Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse.
